Saskatoon Berries

Iinii Insights

Known as misâskwatômin in Cree, Saskatoon berries grow across western Canada. With summer just around the corner, nothing beats fresh saskatoon berry jam served with warm bannock or frybread!

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups Saskatoon berries
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Juice & grated peel of 1/2 lemon

Instructions:

  1. Gently crush the berries in a pot.
  2. Heat until juice begins to release.
  3. Stir in sugar and water, then bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  4. Add lemon juice and peel.
  5. Continue cooking, stirring frequently for about 15 minutes, or until the jam thickens.
  6. Pour into clean jars and let cool.

Serve with bannock or frybread for a true treat.

Word of the Week

Speech and Language Pathologist | Ms. Kailey

Each week, we will be focusing on a new “Word of the Week” (WoW) at school to help boost language skills. The WoW will be chosen to encourage vocabulary growth, strengthen communication skills, improve grammar, and help your child increase their understanding of language. Throughout the week, we encourage you to emphasize the WoW in everyday conversations and activities at home. Families can do this by reading books and finding the WoW, playing games, or simply chatting about your child’s day together. Helping your child think about the WoW at home will make learning even more meaningful!

“more”

“More” is a comparative word. It is often used as an adjective (a word that describes people, places, things, or experiences). We often combine the word MORE with things (more fries) or action words (running more quickly).

We have two MORE weeks of school left this year!

Ask your child what they want to do MORE of before the end of the year.

Ask your child about their day. When they share something with you, ask them to tell you MORE about it (e.g., “That’s cool! Tell me MORE!”)

Check out the following read aloud book. Talk with your child about what the author might mean on each page!

I Wish You More

This next read aloud book to is a ton of fun and has many repetitions of the WoW:

More Bears!

Be silly! At different times of the day, give your child the smallest amount of an item (e.g., three noodles of spaghetti at dinner). Wait expectantly for your child to ask you for MORE noodles. If they don’t ask, you can say, “Oh. Did you want MORE noodles?”)

Check out the attached “Would You Rather” Activity – MORE Edition!

Honour Tea

Last week we had the joy of celebrating our amazing volunteers with a special Sunflower-Themed Honour Tea. 🌻

Sunflowers remind us to turn toward the light, grow strong together, and bring warmth wherever we go, just like our volunteers. Over tea, treats, and heartfelt conversations, we shared our gratitude for the many ways they help our school community bloom. Students created handmade cards, shared messages of thanks, and spoke from the heart about how much every act of kindness and support means to them.

Thank you for helping our school continue to grow with care, kindness, and community. 🌻
