Maatoomsii’Pookaiks

CBE’s system-wide Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Maah-doom-see Boo-gaaks) (Children First) Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day was held on Thursday, November 9.

This professional learning day was designed for all staff, regardless of role, to participate in developing foundational knowledge of Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing. This day of learning is part of the commitment to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) 94 Calls to Action specific to education.

To meet these commitments, the CBE Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework positions us to develop the professional capacity of all CBE staff to work towards achieving the CBE Education Plan,

Inii's Insights |  Blackfoot Language

pookaa = child, singular pookaiks = children, plural ópókásin = children as a whole; all children

Duane Mistaken Chief shared that they began as pókakiiks (spirits/whirlwinds) who then took human mothers to become Niitsitapi/real people. Niitsitapi are real people with spirit and body: physical (matapi and spirit (móták, or pókakii which is singular). Grandfather Sun (Naatosi/Kísóm) is í’ihtsipaitapiiyaop— the source of life and life was created by the sun and air. This is the “pó” in the words above. We are grateful for Elder Duane's teachings and generosity in helping us to understand Spirit through Blackfoot language.
