Family Literacy Week
Family Literacy Day is almost here on January 27th! To make it even more exciting, the CBE Literacy & Early Learning Teams have shared a bunch of interesting ideas and resources (linked to the right) to use over the next 8 days. These materials are designed to boost important aspects of literacy, such as reading, writing and oral communication development, and can be easily used at home or in school. Feel free to join in the fun by sharing your celebrations using the hashtags #WeAreCBE and #CBELiteracy.
Green Calgary Challenge
We are excited to share that our school is teaming up with the CBE's waste and recycling efforts to learn more about the impact of breakfast and lunch programs, especially when it comes to waste, including food waste. On January 31, a Green Calgary educator will be at the school for a 24-hour waste audit. This fun and educational activity will help us understand the types of waste we produce and how we can do better. The results from this waste audit will give us insights and tips on reducing waste. We'll find out how much garbage we generate in a day, what items could be composted or recycled, and how we can save more food. Stay tuned for more updates as we work together to make our school a greener and more eco-friendly place
2024-25 School Calendar
The 2024-25 CBE instructional school calendar is now available. The first school day for students for next school year is Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. The calendar includes a minimum of 181 instructional days and 10 system-wide days for schools to schedule parent-teacher conferences, professional development, and other organizational days.
The NLC calendar will be posted on the school website by the end of June with school-specific information (e.g. conferences, celebrations of learning, school council dates, etc.).
Report Cards
Starting January 30, 2024, families can access and review online student report cards for Kindergarten to Grade 2 students. Report cards for the 2023-24 school year are available for viewing, downloading, and printing through your MyCBE account.
2024-25 School Registration
The 2024-25 school year registration began on January 15. If your child is currently in NLC preschool to grade 1, they are automatically registered for the next grade at NLC. Let us know if your child will be attending a different school. In the next few weeks, we will be contacting parents of current grade 2 students to talk about their transition to grade 3 at either their designated community school or in a specialized program.
MRU Nurses
We welcome our guest practicum nurses this week, starting Tuesday, January 16. They will be joining our kindergarten classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays until February 15.
Artist in Residency
We want to welcome Ewa will be joining the Niitsitapi school community to guide art-based inquiry projects from January to March.
Ewa Sniatycka BFA, MEd, is an interdisciplinary, community-engaged teaching artist, interested in stories of identity, belonging, and the environment. She works in collaboration with a variety of folks, creating site-specific residency projects in schools and community settings in western Canada. The residences are collaborative and responsive, tailored to fostering art-based inquiry. Ewa is drawn to clay, because of its primordial and sensual nature, and its vast, creative and expressive potential. Her ceramic work is hand-built and predominantly sculptural. She lives in a tiny old house in Bridgland with her friend Archie.
